Best medication for depression

There are several anti depressants available in the market for all types of depression. Picking one anti depressant as the best is not only difficult but also misleading as each person affected by depression is different from another. It is better to choose the medication as per the type and the signs of depression. There is just no single antidepressant that can be called as best for all people. It has been widely reported after carrying out extensive studies and research that out 100, any given antidepressant may suit only 60 to 70 people. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs like Prozac, luvox, clexa, paxil, Zoloft etc are the newly developed medications which have taken care to reduce the side effects. Hence currently they are the most preferred medications prescribed by doctors and they also have high success rates among many patients. Using SSRIs does not yield many side effects that earlier medications were known for and hence are popular among patients as well. But recently there is tendency among doctors not to prescribe SSRIs first. The most recent drug available in the market is Effexor. This is by far regarded as the best drug as it is reported to be ten percent more effective than others in achieving total remission of signs and symptoms. This was revealed in a recently conducted study.

The reason behind Effexor’s success is its ability to work on two neurotransmitters simultaneously. These are norephinephrine and serotonin. Usually other drugs work on either one of these neurotransmitters. Increasing number of doctors prefer newly developed medications which have been innovated to be more effective as well as cause less or no side effects. These drugs are always used as first line of treatments in patients and it shows reduced level of the signs of depression.
