Causes of Postpartum Depression

Postpartum Depression is very common in women. Though there is still no perfect cause for Postpartum Depression has been known. It has been believed by some of the researchers that it can be caused due to hormonal changes in mother’s body in postpartum period. At the same time it has been noted that signs of depression are also evident in mothers that adopt child. Yet hormonal imbalance can be considered one of the several causes of this disease.

The other reason that can be considered the possible cause is marital insecurity and lowering of self-esteem in women. It has been seen that chances of postpartum depression are low in women who feel the sense of security from their partners. It has been also observed that women can’t care for themselves in postpartum period and hence feel lower self-esteem. This can be another possible cause of postpartum depression.

The fatigue and health problems can also cause signs of depression. The new mothers are usually deprived of proper sleep and hence they feel fatigue and health problems. It becomes very difficult for them to care for their children and themselves due to fatigue. All these lead to depression. The socio-cultural causes also need to be considered. The new mothers also feel that their freedom is reduced and they are locked in home due to their newborn. This also makes them feel less confident and hence invite postpartum depression. These are few of the several causes of postpartum depression that need to be considered for prevention and cure of the disease.
