Clinical depression should not be taken as just a grief or feeling of sadness. It is a disease or illness which completely challenges the ability of affected person to perform day to day activities. Severe depression can even push the person to the verge of committing suicide. Depression not only affects an individual, it is also a burden for his/her family.
If the depression is severe or it is a major depression anti-depressant medication can be helpful in getting rid of few symptoms. But anti depressants are not the only solutions. Often these anti depressants come with side effects and complications. Recent research and studies have raised doubts about effectiveness of anti depressants. Still proper medication is needed whenever there are signs of depression.
It is generally agreed by many scholars that if depression is very severe, medication is helpful. Sometimes even to the extent of saving lives. But a 2006 research shows that not all show improvements after using anti depressants. It is also reported that often people solely depending of anti depressants fall back into depression. If a person is suffering from severe depression and he has all the signs of depression which has made him incapable of handling day to day activities normally and is affecting life to great extent, medication is advised. It would be more beneficial and effective if antidepressants are complimented with self help strategies, exercise or therapy with minimum side effects. Therapy often helps in identifying the root causes of depression and provides valuable insights in to what is causing depression. This gives the required understanding to avoid or prevent getting into depression again.
