Here are some natural remedies for the treatment of depression where the signs of depression are seen.

    1. St. John’s Wort: This is a herb and its botanical name is Hypericum perforatum. It is used from ancient times for the treatment of sadness, anxiety, nervousness and sleeplessness. It can be used effectively to treat mild and moderate cases of depression with lesser side effects. This herb is not much effective for severe depression. It takes 4 to 6 weeks to achieve desirable effects.

St. John’s Wort does not have any major side effect except photosensitivity so one should avoid sun exposure while taking treatment with this herb.

This herb is available at drug stores as well as online in capsules, tablets or tea form.It is contraindicated in pregnant or lactating women and children. It should be used with caution in patients with kidney or liver disease.

    1. Omega-3 fatty acids: It is a kind of fat which is good for proper brain functioning. Our body is not able to synthesise it so we have to take them in our diet.

The richest source of Omega 3 fatty acids is fish such as sardines, salmon and anchovies.Studies have shown that in the countries where cold water fishes are routinely taken in food, the rate of depression is lesser than other countries. It helps a lot to reduce the signs of depression.

When omega-3 fatty acids are taken along with antidepressants at that time it can be more helpful and gives better results than alone antidepressants.

Capsules are available which contain fish oil at medical stores and online also. It has a aftertaste, so, take it before meals.

(3)Folic acid

Folic acid deficiency or vita B deficiency is often seen in patients of depression.

Vegetables, beans, fruits, fortified grains are good sources of folic acid. Folic acid deficiency generally occurs due to malnutrition but aspirin and contraceptives can cause this.

(4)5-HTP

It is naturally produced by body and it increases brain serotonin levels. There are not enough safety evidences of 5-HTP.
