Postpartum depression statistics

Over 75% of women have experienced one symptom or the other as soon as they have delivered a baby. A lot of women feel tied down as they cannot cope with the new responsibility and cannot return to their old life style which was carefree and not bound by such heavy responsibilities. Signs of depression experienced are mood swings, anger, irritability and blues. These signs later become more pronounced and could last for longer periods than ordinary blues. As the baby is something enjoyable as well as tiring to take care of the new mother cannot cope with it.

While most mothers experience mild symptoms 10% could have more severe symptoms which need immediate treatment to avoid becoming chronic. Similar to post partum depression are the mood swings during menopause which are again caused by hormonal changes. All signs of depression could be cured provided the right kind of medication is started early enough.

Women who do not suffer from such disorders are those who have no history of such problems in their family and also have a lot of warmth and comfort and emotional security surrounding them. To make things easier for even normal mothers it is important to give them a lot of care and love during this period so that they do not give in to feelings of depression which could turn worse. These women are usually among the 15% who do not have any disturbing symptoms and all they need is help to overcome the initial trauma of giving birth to a baby.
