Signs of depression in teens

If a teenager appears to be moody and melancholic often parents should look into the reason behind this. In a teenager these moods could lead to more serious problems like drug addiction, alcoholism and suicidal or homicidal tendencies. These are signs of depression which most people go through sometime or the other in life, but in teenagers could prove to be more dangerous. Teens are more susceptible to deeper depression than adults or younger kids because of the hormonal changes in their body which they are unable to cope with sometimes. If your teen shows signs of depression pay more attention to his or her needs and try and try and understand what they need instead of admonishing them. Often and understanding parent or sibling can help them overcome such a situation and return to normal.

As most teenagers have difficult periods when they throw tantrums or go into a shell parents do not realize the extent of the problem. Communicating with children is the best way to be able to find out if something is bothering them and if you as a parent can help. Watch out for some of these signs of depression like changes in sleeping or eating habits, difficulty in concentrating on their studies, anger and hostility towards others, a constant feeling of tiredness and fatigue, no motivation, withdrawn from friends and family and being sad or agitated. If these signs are there for a prolonged period of time then your teen needs help. Getting assistance and treatment from a qualified medical practitioner is imperative to avoid something serious or tragic happening.
