Signs of postpartum depression

A person may have signs of depression but the type of depression has to be diagnosed for the right kind of treatment. Post partum depression comes on immediately after child birth and lasts indefinitely. Treatment given in the beginning can arrest the signs of depression and the new mother can get back to normal faster. This is a period when a lot of hormonal changes take place in the mother’s body and she is also low with her natural immunities. Lack of proper rest and sleep with a new baby to take care of all take their toll on her well being.

The signs of depression which show the onset of postpartum depression are fatigue and a feeling of tiredness all the time, depression and a kind of overwhelming sadness for no rhyme or reason. Apart from this the person cries a lot, is irritable, could have headaches accompanies by chest pain and palpitation and also shallow breathing which makes the person feel claustrophobic and suffocated. There are changes in the eating habits and the person could either sleep through the day or suffer from insomnia. The new mother could either be too anxious about the baby or stop nurturing it completely.

All these signs of depression disappear with the right kind of treatment and a helpful environment at home. Quality time spent with the husband and the baby will help the mother to regain her composure which along with the medication will make her well again. Family support is always necessary in all kinds of depression and here helping with the new baby is also essential for the mother’s well being.
