Depression is not something which just happens suddenly. There are a lot of warning signs of depression before the condition of the person becomes visible to others. Those who are in constant contact with the person can see the change in him or her slowly but surely. The person becomes quieter and does not communicate much with others; is more prone to keeping to himself and avoids mixing; eats and sleeps erratically which affects the day to day functioning. A person who is depressed will seem to be tired all the time and have no zest for life. Someone who was well kept earlier may appear shabby and be disinterested in their surroundings and work. Hobbies and other interests which were normally a vital part of the person’s life will not matter to them anymore.
As the warning signs of depression become more pronounced the person will have bouts of crying and sadness will take over their lives completely. Many have suicidal tendencies and unless treated might attempt this too. Some of them may resort to drugs and alcohol to cope with their condition while others withdraw from people who are close to them and suffer from feelings of guilt and worthlessness. People also feel breathless and break out in cold sweat and feel physically ill. These are not symptoms which they are enacting as for them it is all real and the discomfort is genuine. Once treatment is started they will improve and return to normal, however, medication should not be stopped suddenly and they should be under the supervision of a qualified doctor.
