Depression is a feeling of sadness, loneliness, insecurity and tiredness. The cause is mainly a kind of mental anxiety and not generally because of any physical illness. Initial signs of depression could be a feeling of lethargy and a lack of interest in one’s surroundings. However, if the cause is not diagnosed then it could lead to more serious and acute mental problems and sometimes even result in suicide.
People who understand the cause of their own depression can overcome this feeling by reasoning with themselves but for those who cannot do this counseling and treatment is required. The loss of a loved one, failure, financial problems could all lead to signs of depression.
Treatment for mild cases, apart from counseling, is administration of antidepressant medication which has a relaxing effect on the person. However, if the depression is more severe the person may need stronger medication and other methods of treatment. The cause of depression has to be determined first and only then can the extent of treatment be decided upon.
Depression which is caused by a chemical imbalance like Bipolar disorder is a more serious condition with long draw treatment. Illness which is fatal can bring about severe depression in the person especially when they know that it is something which cannot be treated easily. A lot of drugs bring on depression in patients and here the symptoms usually subside once the drugs are withdrawn. Proper diagnosis and the causes of depression are important in treating this rather difficult symptom.
